The need for health care professionals are on the rise because people are constantly aging and there will always be persons in that age group that will need medical care. The need for nurses is also rising and more people are looking to go into that profession. While the nursing profession can be divided into sub categories, there are general duties that accompany the job that all prospective nurses should be aware of before they make their final decisions.
The basic duties that befalls the general job description for nurses include the treating of patients, the education of people on different types of medical issues and conditions, providing emotional support to patients and also their families and also providing advice to said parties. In this same light, nurses will need to help with the rehabilitation of patients as well. Now in a different aspect, nurses are additionally responsible for documentation, wherein they will be responsible for recording the medical history of a patient along with their current symptoms and if necessary, they will be aiding in the performance and analysis of diagnostic tests that are needed.
Aside from the aforementioned details, nurses are also required to teach the patients and their families that will be with them, how to manage and control the illness, or hoe to reduce the flare up of symptoms. This is generally referred to as post treatment home care education. Even more in depth, is the role that nurses have to play in the lives of terminally ill patients, not just for the patients themselves, but grief counseling for the loved ones who are often more in need of emotional support than the patient. The everyday tasks of nurses however, usually involve specifics, such as immunization, performing of health screenings and attending and conducting blood drives and health seminars and expos, where their educating skills will once again be called upon.
The practices and tasks mentioned before are a generalization of nurse's responsibilities, but these may vary slightly if nurses are specialized to a particular field of nursing. Nurses may choose to specialize in one of four categories which include: Specializing in particular diseases or health conditions, specializing to a specific population, specializing to a particular organ system or specializing in certain work setting or treatment type. Most often you will find that nurses tend to cross specialize and combine two or more of the mentioned specialization categories.
These decisions that nurses make will determine their responsibilities and will often add more or diminish some of the general responsibilities. For instance, if a nurse decides to specialize in ambulatory care, he or she will not need to be in a hospital setting as this is an outpatient form of care and includes responding to patients in quick short spans and providing education to the families on how to help to care for the patient and administer prescriptions if any. The care that is needed for these patients can range from wellness, illness prevention and support for the terminally ill.
