What it Means to Volunteer to Gain Work Experience

By : Steve Volman

If you are a teenager, one of the things that you might cherish is free time. With no responsibilities or any other schedule besides school to follow, young people might end up sitting around at home doing nothing. In a worst case scenario, teenagers might hang out in the streets and get caught up in the wrong crowd. But one thing that young people do like to have is money which naturally, you will need a job in order to get paid. But if a young person doesn't have any kind of work experience, it would be a little harder to get hired. Most places would prefer to hire someone with any kind of work experience or has a record to show that the applicant has a good work ethic. So how does one get any kind of work experience if they can't get hired for a paying job? There's always the opportunity to sign up for volunteer jobs to gain work experience; in the long run, having volunteer experience on your record can help snag a paying job in the future.

What are the values of doing volunteer work in your spare time? After all, what does the participant get out of it since these positions aren't paying? You can get a lot out of signing up for volunteer work the further you explore this option. For one thing, you will have to treat this position as though it were a regular job. Volunteers will have to follow a schedule and not just show up whenever they want. There will be supervisors on hand to make note of your comings and goings. Failure to show up on time or call in when you can't make your shift will result in your position being terminated. Consider your volunteer position as a good start to becoming punctual.

Another example of signing up for volunteer work is gaining new skills that could help with future paying jobs. Interacting with other people can improve your communication skills which can prove valuable for a customer service job. Volunteers that sign up for work to help around in hostels can use that experience later on in life if they pursue a career in hotel management. Not only will you gain skills, but starting out as a volunteer might actually inspire you to pursue a career in fields such as medical, politics, international aid and other job opportunities.

If you're unemployed and tired of being overlooked by someone else who has more experience than you when it comes to getting hired, consider signing up for volunteer work. Or simply get a head start while you're still attending school so when you are ready to get out in the work force full time, you'll have the skills and the experience to show potential employees that you are reliable and the best person for the job of your dreams. So how do you plan on spending your free time? Just hanging around with your friends and possibly getting into trouble or researching volunteer jobs around your area and preparing for your career? If you need anymore inspiration, just think about the future: when your friends are complaining that they can't find any companies that will hire them, you'll have no problem landing many job interviews, thanks to your volunteer work.
