How to Pass the Time While You Are Unemployed

By : Connor R Sullivan

Being unemployed in today's economy is not uncommon. Companies are going under, cutting costs, and laying people off. There are more people collecting unemployment now, and for longer periods of time, than there has been in years. But even if you realize there are plenty of unemployed people out there just like you, you may still have a tendency to feel down in the dumps about your situation. Money problems may creep up on you if you lose your job, and there is no quicker way to bring someone down than to force them to face financial struggles. Even those who planned for the unexpected who are not suffering financial issues may feel unhappy while unemployed.

It can be tough getting up in the morning without somewhere to go and something to do. Many people identify with their careers, and once they lose their job, it takes them awhile to find their identity again. In addition to feeling directionless and crunched for money, you may also be dealing with legal issues surrounding your job. Those working with a worker's comp lawyer or a worker's comp attorney may get run down from all the legal difficulties. There may be days when you feel as if the world is out to get you and everything is just too much. If you are feeling like unemployment is getting you down, take a look at your daily routine and try to make some changes.

If you wake up in the morning now that you are unemployed, and lounge around in your pajamas until after lunch, you may find yourself feeling depressed. Even if you log onto the Internet to do a job search, you may still not feel productive. This is because you are limiting yourself and greeting the day with bad news. Conducting your job search is not instantly going to get you results. You are going to have to send resumes, make calls, and have interviews before you secure work. Therefore the early morning job search just feels like you are spinning your wheels. Instead of rolling out of bed and plopping down in front of the computer, get up, get dressed, and greet the morning with a brisk walk. Head out to the park or walk around your neighborhood. When you get back home, tidy up the house, shower, enjoy a glass of freshly squeezed juice, and fire up the computer. You will be filled with energy from your walk, and feeling like your home and your body are clean, organized, and fresh. Set a time limit on how long you will conduct your job search. For three hours, focus on your resume, your cover letter, and the want ads. During this time, take two or three short breaks. When the three hours has ended, do something else. Any job that pops up in the evening hours will still be there during your next day's search. After your search, you can enjoy a hobby, cook a new recipe for dinner, or spend time with a supportive friend. Approaching your unemployment time like this will help you stay on track and ward off depression.
