Current Law Enforcement Jobs

By : Kurt Staley

In our society we look up to the people whose job it is to enforce our laws and keep us safe. Little kids often say they want to be a police man when they grow up. The truth is there are many law enforcement jobs one could choose to have a career in, from the FBI to police officer. Let's take a look at some of these law enforcement positions.

A police officer is the most common law enforcement job most people are familiar with. These are the men in blue that we see on a day to day basis keeping us safe. Typically to become a police officer you must join a police academy or have some kind of formal training. It usually takes around six months to a year for one to train to become a police officer. There are some police officers that get associate or bachelor degrees before joining the police force. Typically these are the ones that want to move higher up in the ranks of command and feel the degree is an added advantage.

There are state and federal laws. When something or somebody violates a federal law the FBI gets involved. They are the federal branch of law enforcement. To become an FBI agent one must have a bachelors degree and pass rigorous testing. The FBI wants only the best of the best and uses strict standards to weed out those that won't be able to perform the job to the high standards that are demanded. An FBI agent may operate out of a regional office but they have jurisdiction anywhere a federal crime is committed.

A person can also become a State Trooper. Each and every state has their own state troopers. To become a state trooper you must attend their training and pass the physical and mental testing they put you through. State troopers have a greater jurisdiction than regular police but not nearly as much as the FBI agents do. State Police often patrol the interstates making sure travel is safely conducted through the state. They are often responsible for big drug busts due to the fact they are highly trained to notice when somebody might be traveling with the intent of transporting drugs from state to state.

As you can see there are many career paths one can take in the field of law enforcement. You must choose the one that best suits you and your personality. If you decide to be a local police officer you will only be responsible for the town or city you police. Becoming a state trooper would give you more area to cover. If you decide on becoming a federal law enforcement agent you could end up doing a lot of traveling.
