What Ethical Issues Affect Research Oncology Jobs?

By : Wanda Edwards

As with any career, ethical issues can affect the ability for the worker to undertake necessary research. This is especially true in oncology jobs. In fact, there are varied ethical issues that you should consider before applying for such jobs related to medical research, some of which may or may not affect the outcome of patient treatments and patient survival rates.

Oncology jobs that involve research are highly sought after by trained oncologists who wish to research cures and treatments for varied types of cancers. These can range from medications to holistic interventions that may or may not yet be used in regular practices. However, as with all types of medical research, what can and cannot be done in relation to research used on human and animal subjects are constantly changing. In fact, many oncologists are faced with not only public opinion, but what is and is not allowed in the institutions they work for and even within the boundaries of the law of the country they do their research in. The most common ethical issues that oncology jobs involving research face, including:

* how much information should be given to patients - prognosis, progression and the extent of their disease in relation to the researched treatment (s)
* whether to allow terminally ill patients to get involved in clinical type trials as part of cancer research whether withdrawing currently active type treatments for patients is beneficial, safe and/or right to do in relation to their cancers, needs and best interests
* the risks of clinical research trials ending the lives of patients
* the legalities of over-riding or accepting patient designated orders to not resuscitate them

When applying for any oncology jobs involving cancer research, it is important for you to understand these ethical issues. At the same time, you are ethically bound to consider a patient's family, personal, cultural and religious lives and their mental state by using good communications and sensitivity, but keep in mind the legalities involved. By working with a team, addressing these ethical issues is easier to do, though the solutions are never cut and dry.
