What Is the Work Environment Like for Physician Assistant Jobs?

By : Wanda Edwards

Like any career in the medical and health sectors, physician assistant jobs have a very diverse work environment. The workplace can be fast paced sometimes and slow at other times. Generally, however, as an assistant or stand-in for many physicians' tasks, you will have to adapt to a very varied environment that is constantly changing. Thus flexibility and the ability to work odd hours when needed is something that you will have to get used to or accept.

The work environment that you generally will experience with physician assistant jobs is generally a comfortable one in the public sector. You will find a diverse work life, with such workplace normalities as:

* being supervised by a doctor
* providing primary care where the doctor may or may not be present more than up to twice a week
* conferring with the doctor/other medical professionals by phone or other means as required by law and as needed
* providing house calls
* attending to patients by visiting special care facilities/hospitals/clinics
* reporting patient care/needs to the doctor
* varied tasks as designated by the doctor or state law
* specialty assistance, ranging from paediatrics to surgery
* lots of walking and standing
* hours ranging from 20 to 40 hours per week on average
* varied work times - weekends, days, afternoons, mornings and/or evenings
* being on call as needed by patients, the doctor and the law

Though physician assistant jobs provide great diversity in their work environments, no two are the same. Generally, the hours, place of work, work tasks and the type of primary care provided by you will depend on the facility/state that you will work in and the requirements set down by the law and the doctor that you are assisting. Regardless, the work environment for this type of job is amongst the most favourable within the health and medical industries.
