What Does it Take to Become a Web Designer?

By : Susan Bean

With the world turning to the Internet to do most of its communication, the necessity for web sites is on the rise. Web designers are more in demand than ever now. With such a need for people in this field, many people want to know what it takes to become a web design specialist.

Before becoming an online design professional, it is first important to understand all of the basic elements of graphic design. Web design is like an extension of graphic design, so being well versed in the subject will help every web designer to be as knowledgeable as possible in their field. Basic graphic design requires the ability to make a clear and understandable presentation of material in a fun and unique manner. Along with graphic designers, web design professionals must also know how to cleverly integrate words with images to make the product more interesting. Clever and attention grabbing typography is also a must for graphic and online design professionals alike.

Web designers must also be knowledgeable on many Adobe programs. These graphic design programs make the job much simpler than it once was. Photoshop can be used to develop creative graphics and manipulate photos for the use of a website. Dreamweaver is probably one of the most handy tools because it makes the process of developing a website simple and straightforward.

Though there are many programs that can now make a designer's job much easier, it is still essential that they understand the basic elements of web design, like HTML. Understanding HTML code is like speaking another language, and it can take a long time to learn, however, it can make the process of web design much easier. Web design programs are made to basically translate HTML code into English and back again between the web site and the creator. Like any program, it can sometimes have certain quirks and defects. Knowing HTML can help fix problems quickly and efficiently when working with more advanced web design programs.

In order to be successful, you should be able to think cognitively from the perspective of the consumer. Though not every website is designed to sell products, the website itself is a product and all visitors can be considered consumers. It is important for any lucrative business to always impress the consumers. Understanding what the consumers want and how they will try to go about getting it is extremely important for any web designer.

Web design can often be a tricky thing to learn, but it can also be fun and exciting. This increasingly demanding field is a great way to break into the communication industry. Understanding the requirements is the first step to becoming a good web designer.
