Transferable Skills Administrative Assistants Should Develop

One of the things that employers look for most today in almost any industry is transferable skills. As an administrative assistant, transferable skills can help you to do your job better and they can help you to move ahead in your career.

What are transferable skills? They are general skills that are seen often in job advertisements and they are seen when employers are searching for a variety of positions. They are high in demand because they can be put to use in many different ways. These job skills will make you more employable in a wider variety of positions and in many industries.

Some of the transferable skills you should seek to develop include:

* Communications skills - This includes both verbal and written communications. No matter what level of employee is being sought and for almost every position, communications skills are very important. This is one of the reasons that employers put so much weight on the resume, cover letter, and interview process. In many jobs, the ability to write clearly is valued but as an administrative assistant it is more than just important - it is a critical skill. The same applies to verbal communications. Administrative assistants but be able to relay information in writing and in words and they must be able to do so in a manner that is understandable to the receiver of the message. If you have good communications skills this can help you move forward in your career as this is a skill that is also required by managers, supervisors, and team leaders.
* Computer skills - basic computer skills are an expectation in today's workforce but those who have advanced computer skills are highly employable. They are often the ones that advance quickly through an organization because with the changes in technology businesses need staff that is able to learn new software programs quickly and help others to learn it. Businesses need people that are not afraid of new.
* Training skills - the ability to teach others how to do things, whether it is to use new software or to use email better, is appreciated by employers. If you have ever trained someone else or if you have trained groups of people this is a great skill to highlight on your resume. And once you are on the job, take advantage of opportunities to show off this skill.

There are many more skills that can be transferred from job to job or from career to career so think about what you have actually done on your last few jobs. You may discover that some of the skills that you developed can easily be transferred from one job to another.
