How to Find Your Nursing Salary in Australia

By : Bridget Sanders

Determining your potential nursing salary may be one of the first things you wish to find out when deciding on moving to Australia to further your career. Like with many industries, the salaries for particular jobs vary around the world, so how can you find out what salary range you belong to in the Australian nursing industry?

Salary ranges within this particular industry vary according to experience. Nurses in Australia receive different classifications according to their education and experience. Victoria is the only state which operates a different classification system to the rest of the country.

In Victoria, nurses are classified in one of five ways according to their education. These are known as 'RN Divisions' with the divisions numbered 1-5. Currently only divisions one and two are open for application, with the latter 3 being phased out.

Outside of Victoria, nurse classification is in following three ways:

- Nurse Practitioner
- Registered Nurse
- Enrolled Nurse

Through understanding these classifications and speaking with an appropriate nursing agency or recruitment business specialising in nursing, you will get an indication as to what salary to expect.

Nursing in Australia is governed by state and nursing regulation authorities, who along with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council facilitate a national approach to the industry's regulation.

Furthering your nursing career in Australia can be both a rewarding and career-defining experience. There are many things to consider when considering this as a viable option. From understanding the structure of the system, to registrations and recruitment. Some areas of the nursing industry in Australia are likely to differ from other parts of the world.
