A skilled professional will be dealing with patients who are not always awake to tell them what they are experiencing inside of their bodies. For this case, you will take the guidance that the doctors give you. The doctors will have all the current information needed in order to make a successful order for you to follow. The information that the doctor will need in order to tell you just what is needed is going to require current x-rays of the persons lungs as well as being able to tell you what they hear when listening to the lungs of the patient.
When the patient is awake and able to talk, then you will have the information needed right from the patient to tell you what they are experiencing with every breath that they take. In some instances, it will be hard for the patient to talk and it will take the combination of you and the doctor to come up with a breathing plan that will help the patient out when breathing.
For all of these reasons, you must possess patience in order to be a good respiratory therapist. Think about how you feel when you have trouble breathing and how you rely on someone else to help you, this is how your patients are going to feel and you will want to make them as much at ease as possible.
