Locum Tenens Positions Require Flexibility

By : Wanda Edwards

There are times when a locum tenens position can turn into a permanent position at a later time. Some hospitals or clinics will use a physician recruiter service to help them find a doctor that matches their philosophy, needs, and goals. Sometimes a place struggles to fill a position because the job is specialized and fewer doctors are capable of satisfying the need.

These positions are available in almost every area in the medical field. Sometimes a cardiology team needs another doctor to join them. In this situation, they would help with the heavy patient load, give out diagnoses and later treatments. On the other hand, a pediatrician would help children with a variety of illnesses or diseases and attend deliveries and C-section. What is expected out of each physician will differ according to the hospital or clinic.

However, there are some things that are necessary for any physician or specialty doctor. The first is a person has to be flexible. Nothing ever goes as planned, and it can become even more complicated when the locum tenens doctor enters into a situation where there are already other doctors and support staff.

The other thing to remember is there might be a time where you will have to protect your own needs. Make sure you are involved in the negotiation process so the contract favors your needs. Otherwise, the agreement should have provisions that cover travel, housing, and offers competitive pay. The clinic or hospital should also be paying for malpractice insurance before seeing your first patient.

Not everyone can be a locum tenens physician, as it includes a lot of travel and usually requires a certain personality. For those who can serve in this fashion, it can be rewarding to offer continued care to people who need it the most.
